Mitch Dion is a percussionist and teaching artist based in the greater Boston area. He graduated from the University of Massachusetts Lowell in 2018 with a Bachelor’s of Music with a concentration in Percussion Performance. His performance experience and musical training have spanned across all genres of music.
At UMass Lowell, he studied both orchestral percussion and drum set with Jeffrey Fischer (Boston Ballet) and Andrew Fordyce. He performed with many of the school’s premiere ensembles including the Wind Ensemble and Jazz Rock Big Band under the direction of Daniel P. Lutz, Percussion Ensemble under Jeffrey Fischer, Concert Band under Blair Bettencourt, Jazz Lab ensembles under Chuck Gabriel, University Orchestra under Mark Latham, as well as several mixed chamber ensembles. He has a number of recording credits on sessions done by UMass Lowell Sound Recording Technology students.
Outside of UMass Lowell, Mitch was a founding member of Lowell based Fusion group Bird Up and also plays in the backing band for Indie Rock songwriter Ethan Lally. As a freelance musician, he has played with the Concord Orchestra under the direction of Richard Pitman and has played both drum set and auxiliary percussion in multiple pit orchestras for musicals around the greater Boston area.
Along with performing and teaching, Dion is an avid composer. His piece “Puzzle”, a quartet for mallet instruments, was premiered by the UMass Lowell Percussion Ensemble in December of 2017.
